Thanks, Basketball, Vets

Thanks to all of you who left comments and sent e-mails after yesterday’s post.  I appreciate all of the support.  Right now my plans are to continue writing on this blog but the subjects will be varied.   Eventually, I will probably have to change since this blog title is so goal specific.  I really enjoy blogging and have a lot to say – just not a lot to say about personal finances.  So we ‘ll see where this goes.

Chant with me.

I’m just a little excited about that great win last night.

Now about the Vet.  I had to take the puppy in yesterday to get “fixed”.  I went back last night to check on her since she has to stay the night in the hospital.   She looked absolutely pitiful.  I sat in the kennel with her for a little while.   I am such a cry baby at the thought of pain for anyone including animals.  Anyway, I went back out to the front desk and there was a man (about my age 40+) who brought in a small dog.  The dog had gotten sick over night and was going downhill fast.  The man was explaining he only had $50 but could the vet please see the dog.   I have a great vet who would never let a sick dog walk out the door but it was obvious this man  was not able to afford this bill.  So, I ask the receptionist to add his bill to my bill.   As I drove home I realized that being able to give to someone without having to worry if I could really afford it  is what I have been striving for.  The important thing is the man’s dog is going to be fine.

Snow Day, Vet Visit, A New Coat

It’s SNOWING in South Carolina.  I mean it is really snowing.  Has been for several hours now.  Snow here usually lasts about 5 minutes.  Today we are supposed to have snow for about 6-8 hours.  I’m not sure how much will accumulate but there is a good chance that things will be shut down again tomorrow.  That is both good and bad.  I have so much to do that just can’t be done with people here.  The dogs are loving the snow and so is Kennedy.  So we will sit by the fire with hot chocolate all day.

The puppy had another vet visit yesterday.  This one was $98.  She got her last set of puppy shots and some medication for her ears.  I never knew that dogs with long floppy ears tend to have ear infections.  My little animal shelter rescue pup is becoming a DESIGNER pup very quickly.

Remember THE LIST – Well Ashby went out with friends over the weekend.  I think another friend needed a coat so they went to the mall to find one.  Ashby called to say he found a coat on sale.  It wasn’t leather and I have no idea what it looks like but he got it for $13 from Old Navy.  He said it was originally around $100.  He was quite proud of himself and I must say I was quite proud too.  Sounded like the deals were so good several of the boys bought coats.

Vet Bills

I was just talking to my sister about our vet bills.  She just got a pure bred dog that is about a week younger than our new animal shelter adopted puppy.  I was surprised by the difference in the vet bills.  I was told by a friend that my vet is expensive and I should try this office on the other side of town.  First, let me say that we have had the same vet for 8 years.  Our older dog is a rescue dog that was hit by a car and left on the side of the road for dead.  My neighbor (who happened to be a surgeon) picked her up and took her to this particular vet.  She has a metal pin in her hip and because of this runs sideways.  Back to the point, we stayed with this particular vet because we honestly believe he is the best in town.

My sister said that her dog’s visit for checkup and shots is a third of what I paid for the first visit.  Our second visit was even more because of the skin rash.

I don’t mind paying for a quality doctor – I do the same for my family members – but I was a little surprised by the difference from one office to another.  The vet that we use is on the “rich” side of town and the other is on a “poorer” side of town.

I think it would be hard for me to change vets.  Just like a doctor for my kids I need to completely trust him.

Have you noticed big differences in vet fees within the same area?  Would you change vets based on the cost?
