Kick in the butt – Reduced Expenses

This blog has been a tremendous kick in the BUTT.   All of your comments really give me the motivation to step up and do something.  Just writing it and getting your feedback really gives me that boost to do what needs to be done.

First, with the hospital bill I would have never called back until I received the statement in the mail.  With the encouragement of several readers I called back and got it all worked out the very next day.  This would have lingered for weeks without your encouragement.

Second, after writing about my utility expenses I got some great feedback.  Thanks all of you for your comments.  I really appreciate it.  I did two things today.

1)  I downgraded our Netflix.  Thus, saving about $5 per month.  We use the instant play portion of Netflix much more than movies in the mail so this works out great.  After a few months I may downgrade one more step.

2)  After looking over my electric bill I realized that only two months in the entire year has my bill gone over $142 – February and August.  As a matter of fact most months the bill is around $70 – $90 so this would be a big savings most months.  Also, we have a credit right now of about $232 so we actually won’t have a bill for a few months.

We also told the kids we were thinking of downgrading cable.  Younger son wanted to know how much we pay and when I told him the cable portion of the bill is $68 he agreed we didn’t need it.  Older son wasn’t happy with the idea so we won’t do anything until January when he is back in college.  I can’t promise we will follow through with this but  just to think it wasn’t totally shot down was great.  We would still do antenna enhancement which I think cost $6 per month and gives 15 channels.

  1. Congratulations on resolving the hospital bill issue. Looks like you’re teaching your younger son well. 😀 (I don’t know if I can give up cable. I can totally understand your older son’s resistance.) It’s so hard to downgrade.

  2. Hi there-a big well done for making progress in this area, utilities are very hard to break through, but you’ve done good!

  4. We too just cut the cable. But not totally. We went from expanded basic to basic. The savings is from about 50 to about 20 a month. My oldest son (13) has been saying that he is so surprised at the fact he has not had too much trouble finding stuff to watch.. Be sure and show your kids that 90% of stuff on tv can be found online! Got to for some great connections.

I feared this would be a tough transition for us, but surprisingly it has not! Keep up the good work!
