Update on Hospital Bill

Thanks to all for your suggestions.  I am now calm. I called back this morning since I was past the mad stage and just wanted answers.  The bill was not from 1998 – it was from 2007.  It was from when my son had his hand surgery.  She told me that there was a bill for $707.xx  that wasn’t paid.  I just happened to remember seeing that number on something I was looking through on the old bills so I knew it had been paid.  I told her to give me a minute and I would give her the date, the amount of the check and the check number.  She was impressed that I had things that organized (LOL).  Anyway, she is going to send me the information and I am going to send her a copy of the cancelled check  and that will clear that up.  Where this lady got 1998 from is crazy.

She also said they should have been giving me a 10% discount.  They do that for people who actually pay.  So I am sending the payment directly to her and she will handle it from there.

Once I get the information on my sons account from her that will be cleared up too.  Isn’t it amazing what you can accomplish when the person on the other end is competent.  She has restored my faith in hospital billing.  I am also going to send a note to her supervisor about how helpful she was.

The one thing I have learned from all of this is to keep good records.  I am sure I have everything from at least 2000 as far as doctor and hospital bills go.  The last couple of years everything is VERY organized but anything more than 3 years old is all stuffed in the same box.

  3. I know that it pays to be organized but I still haven’t learned my lesson. Glad this was nothing more than a mix up.

  6. I’m glad you cleared that up as well. Your story sounds awfully similar to a problem I had several years back of an unpaid hospital bill that was sent to collections. The problem is, they sent the bill to my old address which is VERY similar to my current address. When they did the intake, the receptionist never bothered to update the address and the bills never made it to me. Anyhow, since the bills weren’t past the statute of limitations, I called the collection agency who was extremely unhelpful and rude (surprise, surprise). I called the hospital several times. The first few people I spoke to gave a rat’s patootie and were extremely unhelpful and treated me like a deadbeat. But finally when I spoke to a competent person, we discovered the mistake on the billing address. I offered to pay the bill in full but ONLY with a written agreement that they will have the collection agency item removed from my credit report. Everything eventually worked itself out. 😀 Glad to hear that you have good records. I’m sure this will resolve very soon.
