Do you shop at Wal-Mart?

In the past I have steered clear of Wal-Mart. The main reasons being 1) customer service was awful- I know this isn’t the case everywhere but for our store it is 2) when they first came many smaller stores went out of business 3) it was on the other side of town 4) there have been several fights in the store between shoppers – physical fights where the police were called and people arrested.

Recently we have had a new store open on this side of town.  During the initial couple of months I wouldn’t attempt to go in because everyone else was there checking it out.  Now the dust has settled I could probably get in and out pretty quickly.

Yesterday, I received the new Wal-Mart grocery ad and the prices are cheap.  Very cheap compared to Harris Teeter.  I’m thinking maybe I should check it out.

I know lots of people have very strong opinions – pro and con – about Wal-Mart.  I would love to hear yours.

  1. I don’t usually shop at Walmart because it’s not very clean, but I do get cat litter there.

  3. An unmitigated NO from me. I avoid it like the plague. It makes me feel dirty. Squalling kids, narrow aisles, etc. I’d rather pay a little more somewhere else than go to Wally-world.

  4. I’m in the “NO” camp as well. The for one reason, the closest one to me is 20 mins away which makes it not convenient. Additionally, I saw the documentary that was made not that long ago called “WAL-MART: The High Cost of Low Price” and that REALLY turned me off. I’d rather pay a little more and support a local business.

Here’s a link to more info about the movie if you’re interested (it was really well-done, I thought): http://www.walmartmovie.com

  5. I only shop at Walmart for mostly the grocery section. And that is not very often. I usually will by canned foods, paper towels, or maybe toilet paper because they are quite cheaper. But 95% of the time, I use the regular grocery store or CVS for my shopping. And I always go there at like 1am to avoid all traffic. Thx for stopping by my blog.

  6. When I lived closer to Walmart; I would go there for papertowels and laundry detergent if I just could not get to Target. I tried to avoid it because it’s a madhouse!!! I did go recently to shop for some toys for the holidays and check out their ornament section but I have to go in the morning to avoid the crowds. That is about all I get from Walmart.

  7. I like Walmart. I am probably in the minority here, I know. Walmart is less than 2 miles away for me, and they will price-match all advertised items. So its easier for me to gather all of my ads and head to Walmart to get what I want. I can do everything in one trip. I do prefer to get all that I can from CVS, but they dont carry everything. I will admit though that I like to limit my WM trips to once a month or less.

  8. No, won’t go in one. If they still emphasized made in america I would, but importing cheap toxic products in the name of saving a buck is deplorable.

  9. I know Walmart gets demonized by a lot of folks, but they certainly used their knowledge and logistics expertise to help out in a big way in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina:

Having lived in New Orleans for three years (all prior to Katrina), I am grateful to them for that at the very least. They have other issues, but so do all corporations. For whatever reason, it seems like it has become trendy to pile criticism on Walmart more so than other businesses. Anyway, my two cents. I do shop there when convenient, but don’t go out of my way to get there or to avoid it.

  10. I am with Over the Cubicle Wall — I go either way on the subject… I don’t avoid it but I don’t go there… does that make sense?

  11. Wow, physical fights?! We don’t have a Walmart but I’m not adverse to going in one when I’m in a town that has a Walmart. I must go in newer ones because I’ve not experienced some of the issues your other commenters relate.
